Rhinerriza divitiflora
(Rasp Root Orchid)
So-called because of its long rasp-like roots, this orchid seems to like brush box trees in bright light. The few small, wavy-edged leaves are insignificant until the plant flowers. The flowers racemes are about 30cm long and bear numerous brightly coloured flowers which, however, are short-lived. (This orchid species is classed as one of the "one-day wonders" - said to flower for only a day each year – but the one pictured below lasted at least twice that long!)
The flowers are each about 50mm across and a close view reveals their beauty.
